Dr. Maheswarappa BM is one of the most eminent and distinguished Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist in the country. He has extensive knowledge, skill and experience in pain management and rehabilitation of traumatic and non-traumatic conditions of orthopedics, spine and neurological conditions. He did his graduated from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. He completed post-graduation course MD in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from AIIMS, New Delhi and training in sports medicine from Sports Authority of India, New Delhi. Since there was need of surgical training to manage long term medical complications in patients with orthopedic and neurological disorders like spasticity, deformity, contractures, pressure ulcer, tendon transfer, arthrodesis etc., he went to Balaji Institute of Surgery Research and Rehabilitation for Disabled (BIRRD) at Tirupati and got extensive surgical training for two year. His keen interest in disability and challenges of patients with neurological disorders made him to join three years senior residency program in neurological rehabilitation at NIMHANS. Soon after the program he joined Manipal Hospital, Bangalore. to set-up India’s first department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of comprehensive in nature. After a decade of successfully establishing the department, now he has moved to Sakra World Hospital, Bangalore. He is member of Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Indian Association Sports Medicine and Indian Association of Spinal cord injury. He also does community based rehabilitation and training of community based rehabilitation workers in Association of People with Disability (APD) a non-government organization in Bangalore. Professor Dr. C.V. Harinarayan is an excellent clinician, accomplished researcher, and scientist, astute bedside investigator, exemplary organizer, and administrator. He has an outstanding contribution in the field of Endocrinology. His research work has provided new perspectives on the correct diagnosis and treatment of metabolic bone diseases. He documented low vitamin D levels and low dietary calcium intake in urban and rural health subjects through population survey. By in-vitro studies of vitamin D synthesis, he showed that Indians could synthesize enough vitamin D by exposing 10 to 15% of body surface area to midday sun for 30 minutes. His work on dietary calcium and vitamin D status of Indian population could potentially change the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) of India. He showed that low vitamin D status as the cause of bone disease in primary hyperparathyroidism. He was a co-chair in the development of “Clinical Practice Guidelines on Management of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (2012-13) – Executive Summary and Recommendations” for Indian Menopause Society. He has studied vitamin D status in various endocrine and non-endocrine diseases like Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus - Epilepsy – Thyrotoxicosis – Crohn’s disease and Pulmonary Tuberculosis. His scientific work showed that correction of vitamin D deficiency could improve the pancreatic beta cell secretory function. His studies showed that renal tubular damage as the cause of bone disease in fluorosis (Ranked top 10 publications - the year 2007 by Internet). His work is internationally acclaimed and is quoted by many authors in their publications as well as in various textbooks. He has several publications in international and national journals. He has co-authored a book on diabetes and has written several chapters in many textbooks. As recognition of his contributions to the National academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) conferred on him “Fellow Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS)” and the Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow and Edinburgh conferred on him the FRCP (Glasgow & Edinburgh). He has won several awards like, “Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award 2003 – Operational Research” by the Medical Council of India. Received the award from the Hon’ble President of India; APSA- 2006 Award (Andhra Pradesh Scientist Award –2006) for excellence in medical research by the Andhra Pradesh Council of Science and Technology (APCOST) (State branch of DST, New Delhi); “Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize for the year 2008” for the work and fluorosis by ICMR, New Delhi, 2011; Kala Rathna award 2007, by Bharathamuni Arts Academy, Madanapalle, AP, 2007, “SamikyaBharth Gaurav Satkar 2006” (formerly Ugadi Puraskar) for “Excellence in Medical Research”, at Vishakhapatnam, AP, 2006.
