An ileal conduit is a surgical procedure used to create a new way for urine to leave the body when the bladder is removed or no longer functions properly. This is commonly done after bladder removal surgery (cystectomy), often due to conditions like bladder cancer.
In this procedure, a small piece of the small intestine (ileum) is used to form a passage (conduit) for urine. The ureters (tubes from the kidneys) are connected to this segment, and one end is brought out through the abdomen to form an opening called a stoma.
Urine flows continuously through this passage and is collected in a special external pouch (urostomy bag). Unlike a normal bladder, the ileal conduit does not store urine, so there is no control over urination.

1. Ileal Conduit (Incontinent Diversion)
The most common type, where urine continuously drains into an external bag without control.
2. Continent Urinary Diversion
Creates an internal pouch to store urine, which is drained using a catheter.
3. Neobladder Reconstruction
A new bladder is created using intestinal tissue, allowing more natural urination in selected patients.
● Patient is given general anesthesia
● Bladder may be removed (cystectomy) if required

● Ureters are attached to the ileal segment

The surgery is usually performed along with bladder removal and may take several hours depending on the condition.
After surgery, patients are monitored in the hospital and may stay for several days. The stoma may initially be swollen and requires proper care.
Patients will be taught how to manage the urostomy bag, including cleaning and changing it regularly. Adjusting to life with a stoma may take time, but most people can return to normal activities.
