Ileal Conduit doctors by city

How Ileal Conduit Surgery is Performed?

An ileal conduit is a surgical procedure used to create a new way for urine to leave the body when the bladder is removed or no longer functions properly. This is commonly done after bladder removal surgery (cystectomy), often due to conditions like bladder cancer.

In this procedure, a small piece of the small intestine (ileum) is used to form a passage (conduit) for urine. The ureters (tubes from the kidneys) are connected to this segment, and one end is brought out through the abdomen to form an opening called a stoma.

Urine flows continuously through this passage and is collected in a special external pouch (urostomy bag). Unlike a normal bladder, the ileal conduit does not store urine, so there is no control over urination.

Purpose & Benefits of Ileal Conduit

● Provides an alternative way to pass urine after bladder removal

● Helps treat bladder cancer and severe bladder conditions

● Reduces risk of urine retention and kidney damage

● Improves quality of life in patients with bladder dysfunction

● Relatively simpler and widely used urinary diversion method

● Suitable for patients who cannot undergo complex procedures

Who May Need Ileal Conduit?

● Patients with bladder cancer requiring bladder removal

● Individuals with severe bladder damage or dysfunction

● Patients with recurrent pelvic cancers

● People with neurogenic bladder conditions

● Individuals with severe urinary incontinence

● Patients with congenital urinary abnormalities

Types of Ileal Conduit (Urinary Diversion Types)

1. Ileal Conduit (Incontinent Diversion)

The most common type, where urine continuously drains into an external bag without control.

2. Continent Urinary Diversion

Creates an internal pouch to store urine, which is drained using a catheter.

3. Neobladder Reconstruction

A new bladder is created using intestinal tissue, allowing more natural urination in selected patients.

Ileal Conduit Procedure: Step-by-Step

● Patient is given general anesthesia

● Bladder may be removed (cystectomy) if required

● A small segment of the ileum (small intestine) is removed

● Remaining intestine is reconnected

● Ureters are attached to the ileal segment

● One end of the segment is brought out through the abdomen to form a stoma

● Urine begins to flow through the conduit into a urostomy bag

The surgery is usually performed along with bladder removal and may take several hours depending on the condition.

Recovery & Aftercare

After surgery, patients are monitored in the hospital and may stay for several days. The stoma may initially be swollen and requires proper care.

Patients will be taught how to manage the urostomy bag, including cleaning and changing it regularly. Adjusting to life with a stoma may take time, but most people can return to normal activities.

Risks & Possible Complications

● Infection

● Urinary tract infection (UTI)

● Stoma-related problems (bleeding, narrowing, irritation)

● Bowel obstruction

● Leakage from surgical connections

● Vitamin B12 deficiency due to ileum removal

Although complications can occur, the procedure is widely used and considered effective.

Ileal Conduit vs Other Treatments

Ileal conduit is the most commonly used urinary diversion method because it is simpler and has fewer complications compared to more complex procedures.

Other options like neobladder or continent diversion allow more control over urination but involve more complex surgery.

Unlike normal bladder function, the ileal conduit does not store urine, so patients must use a urostomy bag continuously.

Frequently asked questions

What is ileal conduit used for?

It is used to create a new pathway for urine after bladder removal or severe bladder dysfunction.

Is ileal conduit surgery painful?

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so there is no pain during the procedure. Some discomfort may occur during recovery.

How long does ileal conduit surgery take?

The procedure usually takes several hours, especially if combined with bladder removal surgery.

How many procedures are required?

Typically, only one surgery is needed, although follow-up care is essential.

Is ileal conduit safe?

Yes, it is considered a safe and commonly performed procedure, especially for patients with bladder cancer.

What happens if this procedure is not done?

Without proper urinary diversion, urine cannot exit the body properly, which can lead to serious complications and kidney damage.

How long does it take to recover?

Recovery may take several weeks, and patients gradually adjust to living with a urostomy bag.
