Gastritis is a condition in which the stomach lining becomes inflamed or irritated. It may cause stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, or vomiting.
Common symptoms include pain or discomfort in the upper stomach, nausea, vomiting, and feeling full quickly. Some people may also have loss of appetite or weight loss.
Gastritis can be caused by an H. pylori infection, some pain medicines, alcohol, or other conditions that affect the stomach lining. The exact cause can be different for each person.
Treatment depends on the cause of gastritis and may include medicines that reduce stomach acid. If H. pylori infection is present, doctors may use antibiotics and other medicines to treat the infection.
A doctor may suggest blood, stool, or breath tests to find the cause of gastritis. An upper GI endoscopy may also be used to examine the stomach lining when needed.
Some people may feel better by avoiding foods or drinks that make their symptoms worse. Limiting alcohol and reducing foods or drinks that irritate the stomach may also be advised.
Some anti-inflammatory pain medicines, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, can irritate the stomach lining. Talk to a doctor before stopping or changing any medicine that you take regularly.
You should see a doctor in Pune if stomach pain or indigestion lasts for more than a week or keeps coming back. Medical care is especially important if you have repeated vomiting, weight loss, or difficulty swallowing.
Severe gastritis can sometimes damage the stomach lining and cause bleeding. Vomiting blood or passing black, tar-like stools needs immediate medical attention.
Ask about the possible cause of your symptoms, recommended tests, medicines, and food or lifestyle changes. You can also ask when you should return for a follow-up if your symptoms do not improve.
