What Is an X-Ray?

X-Ray Procedure
The X-ray procedure is simple and usually takes only a few minutes.
1. Before the test, patients may be asked to remove jewellery, glasses, or metal objects that could interfere with the imaging process. In some cases, patients may need to wear a hospital gown.
2. The patient is positioned near the X-ray machine. Depending on the body part being examined, the patient may stand, sit, or lie on an examination table.
3. Certain body parts that are not being examined may be covered with a lead apron to reduce unnecessary exposure to radiation.
4. The X-ray machine sends radiation beams through the body toward a detector or digital sensor. The sensor records the radiation that passes through the body and converts it into an image.
5. Sometimes, several images may be taken from different angles to provide a clearer view of the body structure.
The entire procedure is quick and painless. Patients are usually asked to remain still for a few seconds while the images are taken to prevent blurring.
Recovery and Aftercare
In most cases, no recovery time is needed after an X-ray. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the test.
If a contrast dye is used during the procedure, doctors may advise patients to drink plenty of fluids afterward to help remove the dye from the body.
The X-ray images are reviewed by a radiologist or healthcare provider who prepares a report explaining the findings. The results are then shared with the patient’s doctor, who discusses the diagnosis and any necessary treatment options.
Risks and Possible Complications
X-rays are generally safe and widely used in medical practice. However, because they involve radiation, there are some minor risks.
Possible concerns include:

● Slight increase in long-term cancer risk with repeated exposure
● Potential risks for unborn babies if performed during pregnancy
