A ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is a surgical procedure used to treat a condition called hydrocephalus, in which excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates in the brain’s ventricles. This buildup increases pressure inside the skull and can damage brain tissue if not treated.
The VP shunt system diverts excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain to the abdominal cavity (peritoneal cavity), where the body can safely absorb it. By reducing pressure inside the brain, the procedure helps relieve symptoms and prevent further neurological complications.
