Pyeloplasty doctors by city

What is Pyeloplasty?

Pyeloplasty is a surgical procedure used to treat a blockage between the kidney and the ureter. The ureter is the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. When this area becomes narrow or blocked, urine cannot flow properly. This condition is called ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction.

When urine cannot drain normally, it may collect in the kidney and cause swelling. This swelling is called hydronephrosis. Over time, it can lead to pain, infections, kidney stones, or damage to the kidneys. Pyeloplasty helps correct this problem by removing the blocked or narrow section and reconnecting the ureter to the kidney so urine can flow normally again.

The main goal of the surgery is to restore normal urine flow and protect kidney function. In most cases, pyeloplasty is highly successful and helps relieve symptoms such as pain and swelling in the kidney.

Who May Need a Pyeloplasty?

A doctor may recommend pyeloplasty surgery for people who have kidney blockage problems, such as:

● Ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction

● Swelling of the kidney (hydronephrosis)

● Repeated kidney infections

● Kidney stones caused by poor urine drainage

● Pain in the side or back due to urine buildup

● Reduced kidney function because urine cannot drain properly

● A blockage present since birth that does not improve with time

Doctors usually confirm the condition using tests such as ultrasound, CT scans, or other imaging methods.

Types of Pyeloplasty Surgery

There are different ways to perform pyeloplasty, depending on the patient’s condition and the surgeon’s recommendation.

1. Open Pyeloplasty

This is the traditional method. The surgeon makes a larger cut on the side of the body to reach the kidney and repair the blockage. It is effective but usually has a longer recovery time.

2. Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty

In this method, the surgeon makes several small cuts and uses special instruments and a camera to perform the surgery. This approach usually causes less pain and allows faster recovery.

3. Robotic Pyeloplasty

This is a modern form of laparoscopic surgery where robotic tools assist the surgeon. It provides better precision and control during the procedure.

All these methods aim to remove the blocked part of the ureter and reconnect the healthy section to the kidney.

Pyeloplasty Procedure

A pyeloplasty procedure is usually performed in a hospital under general anesthesia. This means the patient is asleep during the surgery and does not feel pain.

First, the surgeon makes one or more small incisions near the kidney area. Then the blocked or narrow part of the ureter is carefully removed. After removing the obstruction, the surgeon reconnects the ureter to the kidney so that urine can flow normally again.

During the surgery, the doctor may place a small plastic tube called a stent inside the ureter. This tube helps keep the passage open and allows urine to drain while the area heals. The stent is usually removed after a few weeks.

The entire surgery usually takes about two to three hours. After the procedure, the patient may stay in the hospital for one or two days for observation. Doctors monitor urine flow, pain levels, and overall recovery before discharge.

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after pyeloplasty surgery is usually smooth, but it still requires proper care. Most patients start walking and drinking fluids within a day after the procedure.

Many people can return to normal activities within one to two weeks, but heavy physical activity should be avoided for about four to six weeks.

Some patients may experience mild pain, swelling, or blood in the urine for a few days. This is usually temporary and improves as healing progresses.

Doctors often recommend the following aftercare steps:

● Drink plenty of fluids to help urine flow properly

● Take prescribed medicines such as antibiotics or pain relief

● Avoid lifting heavy objects for several weeks

● Keep the surgical area clean and dry

● Attend follow-up appointments to check kidney healing

Follow-up visits are important because the doctor may remove the stent and perform tests to make sure the kidney is draining urine normally.

Risks & Possible Complications

Like any surgery, pyeloplasty has some risks. However, serious complications are not common.

Possible risks include:

● Infection at the surgical site

● Bleeding during or after surgery

● Injury to nearby organs or blood vessels

● Leakage of urine from the repaired area

● Scar tissue causing another blockage

● Blood clots or reactions to anesthesia

In rare cases, the blockage may return and require another procedure.

Despite these risks, pyeloplasty has a high success rate. Studies show that the procedure successfully improves urine flow and kidney function in about 95% of patients.

Understanding the benefits and risks helps patients make an informed decision about the treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What is pyeloplasty surgery used for?

Pyeloplasty surgery is used to treat a blockage between the kidney and ureter. This blockage stops urine from flowing properly to the bladder. The surgery removes the blocked part and reconnects the ureter to the kidney so urine can drain normally.

Is pyeloplasty a major surgery?

Pyeloplasty is considered a surgical procedure, but many cases are now performed using minimally invasive methods. These techniques use small cuts and may result in less pain and faster recovery compared with traditional open surgery.

How long does pyeloplasty surgery take?

The procedure usually takes about two to three hours. The exact time depends on the patient’s condition and the surgical method used. After surgery, patients usually stay in the hospital for one or two days for monitoring.

How long does recovery take after pyeloplasty?

Most patients recover within one to two weeks and can return to light daily activities. However, complete healing may take about four to six weeks, especially before resuming heavy exercise or lifting.

Is pyeloplasty surgery painful?

Patients do not feel pain during the surgery because anesthesia is used. After the procedure, mild pain or discomfort may occur for a few days. Doctors usually prescribe medications to manage this pain.

What is the success rate of pyeloplasty?

Pyeloplasty is a highly effective procedure. Medical studies show that it successfully improves urine drainage and kidney function in about 95% of patients when performed by experienced surgeons.

Will I need a stent after pyeloplasty?

Yes, many patients receive a small tube called a stent during the procedure. It helps keep the ureter open while the surgical area heals. The stent is usually removed a few weeks after the surgery.
