A Pap smear test is a screening test used to detect abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix that may lead to cervical cancer.
Women aged 21 to 65 years should undergo regular Pap smear screening as advised by their gynecologist. The screening schedule depends on age, previous test results, and individual risk factors.
You should avoid sexual intercourse, douching, or using vaginal medicines for at least 48 hours before the test. It is also recommended to schedule the test when you are not menstruating for the most accurate results.
A Pap smear test is usually quick and causes only mild discomfort or slight pressure. Most women can resume their normal activities immediately after the procedure.
Most women aged 21–29 years are advised to have a Pap smear every three years. Women aged 30–65 years may need a Pap smear every three years or a Pap smear with an HPV test every five years, depending on their doctor's advice.
An abnormal Pap smear does not necessarily mean you have cervical cancer. Your gynecologist in Delhi may recommend additional tests, such as an HPV test or colposcopy, to determine the cause of the abnormal cells.
It is generally recommended to avoid having a Pap smear during your menstrual period because blood can affect the accuracy of the test. Your doctor may advise scheduling the test a few days after your period ends.
