A lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap, is a medical procedure used to collect a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the lower part of the spine. Cerebrospinal fluid surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. By analysing this fluid, doctors can diagnose or monitor several neurological conditions and infections affecting the central nervous system.
During the procedure, a thin needle is carefully inserted into the lower back (lumbar region) between two vertebrae. The sample of fluid collected can help doctors detect conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis, bleeding around the brain, multiple sclerosis, or certain cancers affecting the brain and spinal cord.
Lumbar puncture may also be used to measure the pressure of cerebrospinal fluid or deliver medications such as anesthetics, chemotherapy drugs, or contrast dye for imaging tests.
A lumbar puncture may be recommended if a person has symptoms or conditions that require evaluation of the brain or spinal cord.
Common reasons include:
● Suspected meningitis or encephalitis
● Suspected bleeding in the brain (subarachnoid hemorrhage)

After a lumbar puncture, most people can go home the same day. Proper aftercare helps reduce side effects.
● Rest: Lie down and avoid strenuous activity for at least 24–48 hours.
● Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids.
● Pain relief: Mild pain or discomfort can usually be managed with pain medication.
● Activity: Normal activities can usually resume within one or two days if there are no complications.
Some people may experience headaches or mild back discomfort for a few days after the procedure.
