Dr. Debashis Deb M.S, F.I.C.S, F.I.A.G.E.S is a senior consultant surgeon based in Kolkata since last 25 years. He received his surgical training at AIIMS, New Delhi. He learned the basics of laparoscopy from Dr. A K Kriplani, then Addl Prof of Surgery, AIIMS, now past president of IAGES. He joined Puspawati Singhania Hospital, Saket, New Delhi as Associate Consultant and Laparoscopic Surgeon and later was selected as Senior Research Associate of CSIR based at IPGMER, SSKM Hospital Kolkata, where he carried out the project of thyroid cancer, first time so far in eastern India. He introduced Oesophageal surgery in the dept. of General Surgery at SSKM Hospital, which was previously done at cardiothoracic surgery, and this practice is still continuing at SSKM hospital. He taught Surgery at KPC Medical College, Jadavpur, as Assoc. Professor till 2010.
At present, he is a teacher for DNB (General Surgery) and FNB (Minimal invasive Surgery) at AMRI, Dhakuria.
Besides these academic attachments, he has been in active practice since last 25 years being attached to AMRI, Dhakuria, SASK (EEDF), Bellevue, Medica Super-specialty Hospital, and Apollo Gleneagles Hospital as Consultant Surgeon.
Laparoscopic surgery, Oesophageal, Pancreatic, Colorectal and Hepatobiliary Surgery are his main area of interest besides Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. He is one of the few surgeons in Kolkata, actively advocating laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancers and has a series of successful surgeries under his belt. He has set up the unit of Obesity and Diabetes Surgery at SASK (EEDF), Jodhpur Park, recently and is the driving force behind it. His bariatric surgery team also consists of a Gastroenterologist, Endocrinologist, Cardiologist, Anaesthetist, Psychiatrist, and Dietician. He regularly writes for scientific peer-reviewed journals as well as for the common man in vernacular press. He is life member of Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) and Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI) and Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons (IAGES).
