General anesthesia may be recommended for people who:

● Are having procedures in areas too large or painful for local anesthesia alone

General anesthesia can be delivered using different methods depending on the procedure and patient needs:
1. Inhalational Agents
Medicines are given through a mask or breathing tube and breathed into the lungs. This is common in many surgeries.
2. Intravenous (IV) Agents
Medicines are given through a vein to quickly put the patient to sleep and maintain anesthesia.
3. Balanced Anesthesia
A combination of inhaled and IV medicines is used for better control and fewer side effects.

General anesthesia is administered in a hospital or surgical Centre by a trained anesthesiologist:
1. Preoperative Evaluation
You meet with the anesthesiologist before surgery. Medical history, allergies, medicines, and previous anesthesia experiences are reviewed. Instructions, such as fasting (no food or drink for several hours before), are given.
2. Monitoring Setup
In the operating room, monitors are placed to track your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing.
3. Induction of Anesthesia
Medicines are given through an IV or mask to make you fall asleep. A breathing tube may be placed in your windpipe (endotracheal tube) to assist with breathing during surgery.
4. Maintenance of Anesthesia
During the procedure, the anesthesiologist adjusts the medicine levels to keep you safely unconscious and comfortable.
5. Emergence from Anesthesia
After surgery, the anesthesia medicines are stopped or reduced, and you gradually wake up as you are taken to the recovery area.
Throughout the process, your vital signs are closely monitored, and adjustments are made to ensure safety.
After general anesthesia:
● Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU): You are taken to a recovery area where nurses monitor your breathing, heart rate, and comfort.
● Awakening: You may feel groggy, confused, or sleepy as the anesthesia wears off.
● Nausea & Thirst: Mild nausea, dry mouth, or thirst are common and usually temporary.
● Pain Control: Pain medicines may be given as needed for post-operative discomfort.
● Diet & Activity: You may start with clear fluids and progress to a normal diet as tolerated. Activity increases gradually based on your surgery and overall recovery.
Most side effects from anesthesia fade within a few hours. Your healthcare team provides specific aftercare instructions for safe recovery.
