Fat Transfer doctors by city

What Is Fat Transfer Surgery and How Does It Work?

Fat transfer, also called fat grafting or fat injection, is a cosmetic procedure where a doctor removes fat from one part of your body and uses it to add volume to another area. Instead of using artificial fillers, fat from your own body is used. This makes the results look natural and long-lasting. Common areas for fat transfer include the face (to smooth wrinkles or add cheeks volume), buttocks (like Brazilian Butt Lift), breasts (to add shape), and hands (to reduce hollow look). Because the fat comes from your own body, the risk of allergic reaction is very low.

Fat transfer has become popular because it uses your own tissue and can improve both the area where fat is taken from (via liposuction) and the area where it is placed. Many people like that they get two benefits from one surgery, shaping the body and restoring volume where needed.

Purpose & Benefits of Fat Transfer

● Uses your own fat, lowering risk of rejection or allergy.

● Improves volume or fullness in areas that have lost fat with age.

● Can reduce the look of wrinkles or hollow areas on the face.

● Helps contour the donor area (where fat is removed).

● Provides natural-looking results that often last longer than fillers.

● Low risk of allergic reaction since your own tissue is used.

Who May Need Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer may be a good option for people who:

● Want to add volume to the face (cheeks, lips, under eyes).

● Have lost facial fat due to ageing and want a refreshed look.

● Want body contouring, removing fat from one area and adding it to another.

● Want to smooth scars or indentations in the skin.

● Wish to add volume to breasts or buttocks for a fuller shape.

● Are in good overall health and have enough fat to harvest.

Before surgery, doctors check your medical history and discuss what you want to achieve, so they tailor the treatment to you.

Types of Fat Transfer

Face Fat Transfer

Used to add volume to cheeks, temples, lips, or under-eye hollows. This helps reduce lines and creases and gives the face a smoother, fuller look.

Breast Fat Transfer

Fat is removed from areas like the abdomen or thighs and placed in the breasts to improve size and shape without implants.

Buttock Fat Transfer (Brazilian Butt Lift)

Fat is taken from the lower body and placed into the buttocks to make them rounder and fuller.

Body Contouring

Fat can be moved to areas like the hips or calves to improve body proportions and curves.

Fat Transfer Procedure: Step-by-Step

1. Consultation: The doctor examines the areas you want to treat and explains what to expect.

2. Anesthesia: You receive local or general anesthesia, based on the area and amount of fat to be moved.

3. Fat Harvesting: Fat is taken from a donor area (like belly, hips, or thighs) using liposuction tools.

4. Processing Fat: The removed fat is cleaned and prepared so only healthy fat cells are used.

5. Injection: The doctor injects the purified fat into the treatment area in small amounts for natural contour and volume.

6. Finishing: The treated areas are gently dressed and monitored before you leave.

The whole process can take 1–3 hours depending on how many areas are treated and how much fat is transferred.

Recovery & Aftercare

After fat transfer surgery:

● You may feel swelling, bruising, or soreness in both the donor and treated areas for a few days to weeks.

● Your doctor may advise keeping treated areas protected and elevated if possible.

● Most people return to normal activities in a few days to a week, but heavy exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for a few weeks.

● Follow-up visits help check healing and results.

Since some of the transferred fat may not survive in its new location, the final result becomes clearer after a few months.

Risks & Possible Complications

Fat transfer is considered safe, but like all procedures, it has some risks:

● Infection at the donor or treated site.

● Bruising or swelling that lasts longer than expected.

● Uneven or unexpected fat loss in the treated area.

● Lumps or irregular contours if fat settles unevenly.

● Need for additional procedures if results change over time.

These risks are more common when many areas are treated at once or when large amounts of fat are moved. Your surgeon will explain your personal risks before surgery.

Fat Transfer vs Other Cosmetic Methods

● Fat transfer vs fillers: Fat uses your own tissue for a natural result, while fillers use synthetic or animal-derived materials and may need frequent repeat treatments.

● Fat transfer vs implants: Fat can enhance breasts or buttocks without permanent implants, but the volume increase may be smaller and vary over time.

● Fat transfer vs non-surgical volume treatment: Fat transfer offers longer-lasting and often more natural updates compared with temporary products.

Your surgeon will help you choose the best option based on your goals and body.

Frequently asked questions

What is fat transfer used for?

Fat transfer is used to add volume to areas such as the face, breasts, or buttocks and to smooth wrinkles, scars, or hollows using your own body fat.

Is fat transfer painful?

You won’t feel pain during the surgery because of anesthesia. Some soreness or discomfort after surgery is common but manageable with medicine.

You won’t feel pain during the surgery because of anesthesia. Some soreness or discomfort after surgery is common but manageable with medicine.

The procedure usually takes about 1–3 hours depending on how many areas are treated.

How many sessions are needed?

Most people need just one session, but some may choose another treatment later for additional volume.

When will I see results?

You’ll see initial volume soon after surgery, but the final result becomes clear after a few months as swelling drops and fat settles.

Is fat transfer safe?

Yes, fat transfer is generally safe when done by trained surgeons. But as with all procedures, it carries some risks your surgeon will explain.

What happens if some fat is lost?

It is normal for some transferred fat not to survive. Your surgeon plans for this and may leave space or recommend a follow-up if needed.
