What Is Facelift Surgery and How Does It Work?

A facelift (also called rhytidectomy) is a surgical cosmetic procedure that helps make the face look younger and firmer by removing loose skin and tightening the underlying tissues. It is commonly used to reduce sagging skin, deep folds around the cheeks and jawline, and excess skin in the neck area. Facelifts cannot stop aging, but they can give a refreshed and more youthful look that often lasts many years.

During the surgery, the doctor makes small cuts near the hairline and ears, lifts the skin, removes extra tissue, and adjusts the deeper layers before closing the incisions. While a facelift focuses on sagging and shaping, it does not correct fine lines or skin surface damage from sun exposure or age.

Purpose & Benefits of Facelift

Facelift surgery is done for facial rejuvenation. It is for improving the visible signs of aging.

• Reduces sagging skin: Lifts loose skin on cheeks, jawline, and neck for a firmer look.

• Smooths deep folds: Helps reduce lines from the nose to mouth and around the chin.

• Defines facial contours: Restores a sharper jawline and smoother neck.

• Boosts confidence: Many patients feel more confident with a rejuvenated appearance.

• Long-lasting results: The effects often last for several years, even though aging continues.

Who May Benefit from a Facelift?

Facelift surgery may be recommended for people who:

• Notice loose, sagging skin on the lower face or neck.

• Have deep creases or folds that don’t improve with non-surgical treatments.

• Are in generally good health and want a more youthful facial appearance.

• Have realistic expectations and understand what a surgical facelift can and cannot do.

Facelifts are usually done for cosmetic reasons, not medical ones.

Facelift Treatment Process

1. Consultation:

The surgeon examines your face, discusses goals, checks your health, and plans the surgery accordingly.

2. Anesthesia:

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia or sedation with local anesthesia so you remain comfortable and pain-free.

3. Surgery:

Small cuts are made near the hairline and around the ears. The skin is lifted, excess tissue is removed, and deeper facial muscles are tightened.

4. Closing & Dressing:

Incisions are carefully closed with stitches, and dressings or drains may be placed to help healing.

5. Recovery:

You will be monitored as the anesthesia wears off and then taken home or to a recovery area. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to check healing.

Facelift surgery can take several hours, depending on the extent of lifting and whether neck lifting is done at the same time.

Duration & Setting

Facelifts are performed in hospitals or accredited surgical centers by trained plastic surgeons. Because it is a major surgical procedure, recovery usually involves:

• A few days of rest and care at home.

• Bandages or moderate swelling will be present in the first week.

• Mild activities can usually resume in about 1–2 weeks, but full healing may take several months.

Safety, Precautions & Risks

Like all surgery, facelifts carry some risks. These may include:

Common effects (usually temporary):

• Swelling and bruising after surgery.

• Mild pain and discomfort as the face heals.

Possible surgical risks:

• Hematoma (blood collection under the skin) requiring treatment.

• Scarring (usually well-hidden).

• Infection or bleeding.

• Nerve injury affecting sensation or movement (rare).

• Hair loss near incision sites.

• Anesthesia risks and wound healing problems. Your surgeon will discuss all risks and recovery expectations before surgery.

Facelift vs Non-Surgical Options

A facelift is a surgical lift, which means it changes deeper tissues and removes excess skin. Non-surgical options, like fillers, thread lifts, or laser treatments, can improve appearance but do not tighten deeper tissues or remove excess skin as effectively as a surgical facelift.

Frequently Asked Questions

A facelift is used to reduce sagging skin and deep facial folds caused by aging, and to improve the appearance of the cheeks, jawline, and neck.

You won’t feel pain during the surgery because of anesthesia. After surgery, mild discomfort and swelling are common but manageable with medicine as advised by your surgeon.

The surgery usually takes a few hours depending on the extent of correction and whether additional procedures (like neck lift) are done.

Yes. Possible risks include bleeding, infection, nerve issues, hematoma, scarring, and anesthesia risks. Most complications are rare and discussed before surgery.

Initial swelling and bruising can last around 2 weeks. Many people resume light activities after about 2 weeks, but full recovery may take several months.

Results are long-lasting but not permanent; aging continues. However, many patients remain satisfied for years after surgery.

There’s no fixed age, but many people consider facelifts when signs of aging become noticeable, often in the 40s to 70s, based on individual needs.

A facelift targets sagging skin and deep folds but does not treat fine surface wrinkles or uneven skin texture; other treatments may be combined for best results.
