Decompressive craniotomy is a brain surgery done to reduce pressure inside the skull. This pressure can build up due to swelling of the brain caused by injury, stroke, bleeding, or other serious conditions. If the pressure is not controlled, it can damage the brain and become life-threatening.
In this procedure, a part of the skull is temporarily removed to give the brain more space to swell safely. This helps reduce pressure and improves blood flow to the brain.
After the swelling goes down, the removed bone is usually placed back. Decompressive craniotomy is often performed in emergency situations and can help save a patient’s life.

1. Unilateral Craniotomy
Only one side of the skull is opened to reduce pressure in a specific area.
2. Bilateral Craniotomy
Both sides of the skull may be opened in severe cases to control widespread swelling.
3. Decompressive Craniectomy
In this type, the bone flap is not immediately replaced and is kept aside until the brain swelling reduces.
