Biliary stent placement is a minimally invasive procedure used to open a blocked or narrowed bile duct. A small tube called a stent is inserted into the bile duct to keep it open and allow bile to flow properly from the liver to the intestine.
Bile plays an important role in digestion, and when its flow is blocked, it can lead to symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin), abdominal pain, nausea, and infection.
This procedure helps relieve these symptoms and improves liver function. It is commonly performed using techniques like endoscopy or image-guided procedures.
● Restores normal bile flow
● Relieves jaundice and associated symptoms
● Improves digestion and liver function
● Reduces pain and discomfort
● Prevents infection due to bile buildup
● Minimally invasive with quick recovery
● Patients with blocked bile ducts
● Individuals with gallstones or bile duct stones
● People with tumors causing obstruction
● Patients with bile duct strictures (narrowing)
● Individuals with pancreatic or liver diseases
● Patients experiencing jaundice or bile flow issues
1. Endoscopic Stent Placement (ERCP)
A thin, flexible tube (endoscope) is passed through the mouth into the digestive tract to place the stent in the bile duct.
2. Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiography (PTC)
A needle is inserted through the skin into the liver, and imaging is used to guide stent placement in the bile duct.
3. Plastic Stents
Temporary stents often used for short-term treatment or benign conditions.
4. Metal Stents
Longer-lasting stents commonly used in cases of cancer-related blockages.
● Patient is given sedation or anesthesia
● The procedure site is prepared
● Endoscope or needle is guided to the bile duct
● Contrast dye may be injected for imaging
● The blockage is identified
● A stent is inserted into the bile duct
● The stent expands to keep the duct open
● Instruments are removed after placement
The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the method used.
Most patients can go home the same day or after a short hospital stay. Mild discomfort, sore throat (in endoscopic procedures), or minor pain at the insertion site may occur.
Patients are advised to rest for a day or two and gradually return to normal activities. Regular follow-ups are necessary to monitor stent function and replace it if needed.
● Infection
● Bleeding
● Pancreatitis
● Stent blockage or movement
● Allergic reaction to contrast dye
● Pain or discomfort
Although risks exist, biliary stent placement is generally considered safe and effective when performed by experienced specialists.
Biliary stent placement is less invasive compared to open surgery and provides quicker relief from bile duct obstruction.
Other treatments like surgery or drainage procedures may be required in severe cases, but stenting is often preferred for its minimally invasive nature and faster recovery.
It is commonly used as both a temporary and long-term solution depending on the underlying condition.
It is used to treat blocked bile ducts and restore normal bile flow from the liver to the intestine.
The procedure is done under sedation or anesthesia, so there is minimal pain. Some discomfort may occur afterward.
It usually takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the technique used.
It can be temporary or long-term depending on the condition. Some stents may need replacement after a few months.
Yes, it is generally safe, though there are some risks like infection or pancreatitis.
Untreated blockage can lead to serious complications such as infection, liver damage, or severe jaundice.
Most patients recover within a few days and can resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
