Patient Q&A
Do you deal with anal itching too?

Doctor, I've had recurring itching around my anus and the skin between my vagina and anus for several months. I pass stool daily, although sometimes it is hard. The itching happens even when I'm not constipated. I sometimes notice small bumps and swelling, and skin protrudes from my anus during some episodes. It settles after a few days and then returns. I have no bleeding or pain during bowel movements, and the burning occurs only after I scratch the area and wash it.
Could you examine the area and help identify the cause of the recurring itching and swelling?

Based on your description, the recurring itching (pruritus ani) and temporary swelling with protruding skin point toward intermittent, prolapsing internal hemorrhoids (piles) or an alternating anal fissure, potentially accompanied by contact dermatitis or a fungal infection from scratching. The burning you experience is a direct result of micro-tears in the skin caused by scratching, which becomes painful when exposed to water or sweat.
An in-person clinical evaluation is crucial with a General surgeon, Gastrointestinal surgeon or a Gynaecologist. They will perform a brief, painless examination and may prescribe targeted medicated ointments (such as a mild steroid, antifungal, or hemorrhoidal cream) or recommend simple lifestyle adjustments to permanently resolve the issue.
Since presently I am mainly working as a Podiatric Surgeon, it would be good if you could consult either of the above said consultants.
