Septorhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that fixes both the inside and outside of the nose. It combines septoplasty (straightening the septum — the middle wall of the nose) with rhinoplasty (reshaping the external nose). This surgery can improve breathing problems caused by a deviated septum and also enhance the nose’s shape and appearance. It is done under general anesthesia by a qualified ENT or plastic surgeon, and the results can improve both function (breathing) and facial balance.
Septorhinoplasty aims to help with both breathing and appearance of the nose:
· Improves nasal airflow: Corrects a bent or deviated septum that blocks breathing.
· Enhances appearance: Reshapes the nose for better facial harmony and symmetry.
· Fixes nose deformities: Helps correct nose shape after injury or birth irregularities.
· Increases self-confidence: Many people feel more confident with improved nasal shape.
· One combined surgery: Instead of separate procedures for function and looks, septorhinoplasty addresses both at once.
This surgery may be suggested if you have:
· Difficulty breathing through the nose due to structural issues.
· A deviated septum causing chronic blockage or snoring.
· Cosmetic concerns such as a crooked or uneven nose.
· Nose deformity from injury or previous surgery.
1. Consultation & Planning: Your surgeon checks your nose, discusses goals, and plans how much straightening and reshaping is needed.
2. Anesthesia: You receive general anesthesia so you stay asleep and pain-free during surgery.
3. Surgical Correction: The surgeon straightens the septum to improve airflow and reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose to achieve the desired external appearance.
4. Closing & Support: Small incisions are closed. Internal splints or external casts may be used to support the nose as it heals.
5. Recovery: Initial swelling and bruising are normal. Most visible swelling improves within a few weeks, but final healing may take up to a year.
Septorhinoplasty is typically done in a hospital or surgical center under general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes 1–3 hours depending on the complexity. You may go home the same day or stay overnight for observation, based on your surgeon’s advice.
Like all surgeries, septorhinoplasty has some risks and requires proper care:
Common after-effects:
Possible risks:
Your surgeon will explain all risks and give specific pre- and post-surgery instructions.
Septorhinoplasty is done to improve how you breathe through your nose by correcting a deviated septum and to reshape the nose for better appearance and function.
You are under general anesthesia during surgery, so you won’t feel pain then. After surgery, mild discomfort and swelling are expected, which improve as healing progresses.
Initial swelling and bruising usually go down within 2–4 weeks, but the nose may continue to refine for several months to a year.
Yes. Risks include bleeding, infection, altered smell, poor cosmetic outcome, or septal perforation. Your surgeon will discuss these clearly beforehand.
Yes. This procedure is designed to correct breathing problems and reshape the nose in one surgery, offering both functional and aesthetic improvement.
Some patients go home the same day, but others may stay overnight depending on health, complexity, and surgeon’s advice.
Yes. The changes made to the cartilages and bones are long-lasting, though it can take time for final healing and shape to settle.
Sometimes insurance may cover part of it if there’s a functional problem (like breathing difficulty), but cosmetic changes are often out-of-pocket.
