Prostatectomy doctors by city

A prostatectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove part or all of the prostate gland, which is a small gland in the male reproductive system. The prostate is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. This surgery is most commonly performed to treat prostate cancer, but it may also be used to treat severe cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate becomes enlarged and blocks urine flow.

During a prostatectomy, the surgeon removes the prostate gland and sometimes nearby tissues or lymph nodes. The goal is to remove cancerous cells or relieve urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate.

There are several surgical techniques used for this procedure, including open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery. The choice of technique depends on the patient’s health, the stage of disease, and the surgeon’s recommendation. Prostatectomy is considered a major surgical procedure, but it can be an effective treatment for prostate conditions when other treatments are not suitable.

Who May Need a Prostatectomy?

A doctor may recommend prostatectomy for men who have:

● Prostate cancer that has not spread beyond the prostate

● Severe benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) causing urinary blockage

● Difficulty urinating or weak urine flow

● Frequent urinary infections or bladder problems

● High prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels with confirmed cancer

● Cancer that does not respond to other treatments

Doctors evaluate the patient’s condition using tests such as PSA blood tests, biopsy, and imaging scans before recommending surgery.

Types of Prostatectomy

There are different types of prostatectomy depending on the medical condition being treated.

1. Radical Prostatectomy

This procedure removes the entire prostate gland along with nearby tissues and sometimes lymph nodes. It is most commonly used to treat prostate cancer that has not spread to other organs.

2. Simple Prostatectomy

In this surgery, only the inner portion of the prostate is removed. It is usually done to treat severe urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (BPH).

3. Laparoscopic or Robotic-Assisted Prostatectomy

This is a minimally invasive technique where surgeons use small instruments and a camera to remove the prostate through small incisions. Robotic assistance allows for more precise movements during surgery.

The choice of procedure depends on the stage of disease, the size of the prostate, and the patient’s overall health.

Prostatectomy Procedure

The surgery is usually performed in a hospital under general anesthesia and may take several hours.

1. Pre-Surgery Preparation

Before surgery, doctors perform tests such as blood tests, imaging scans, and heart evaluations to ensure the patient is fit for surgery.

2. Anesthesia

The patient receives general anesthesia, which keeps them asleep and pain-free during the procedure.

3. Surgical Removal

The surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen or uses small laparoscopic instruments to access the prostate. The prostate gland and, in some cases, nearby tissues are removed.

4. Catheter Placement

A urinary catheter is inserted into the bladder to help drain urine while the body heals. This catheter usually stays in place for about one to two weeks.

5. Closing the Incision

The surgical area is closed with stitches, and the patient is moved to a recovery room for monitoring.

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery after prostatectomy varies depending on the surgical method and the patient’s overall health.

Typical recovery includes:

● Hospital stay of 1–4 days after open surgery; some minimally invasive surgeries allow earlier discharge.

● Temporary urinary catheter for about 1–2 weeks.

● Avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous activity for about four weeks.

● Gradual return to normal activities within 4–6 weeks.

Doctors may recommend:

● Pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) to improve bladder control

● Regular follow-up visits, and PSA tests

● Healthy diet and moderate physical activity

Recovery may take several weeks, and some side effects, such as urinary control problems, may improve gradually over time.

Risks & Possible Complications

Like all major surgeries, prostatectomy carries some risks.

Possible complications include:

● Bleeding during or after surgery

● Blood clots or infection

● Urinary incontinence (difficulty controlling urine)

● Erectile dysfunction due to nerve damage

● Narrowing of the urethra or bladder neck

● Reaction to anesthesia.

Some side effects, such as urinary leakage or erectile problems, may improve with time and treatment. Doctors closely monitor patients to manage complications.

Frequently asked questions

What is prostatectomy?

Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure that removes part or all of the prostate gland to treat conditions such as prostate cancer or severe prostate enlargement.

Is prostatectomy a major surgery?

Yes, prostatectomy is considered a major surgical procedure because it involves removing the prostate gland and requires general anesthesia and hospital recovery.

How long does prostatectomy surgery take?

The surgery usually takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the type of procedure and the complexity of the case.

How long does recovery take after prostatectomy?

Most patients recover within 4 to 6 weeks, although full recovery may take longer depending on the individual and the type of surgery.

Will prostatectomy affect sexual function?

Some men may experience erectile dysfunction after surgery because nerves near the prostate may be affected. In many cases, this improves over time.

Can a man live without a prostate?

Yes, men can live without a prostate. However, they will not produce semen after surgery because the prostate and related glands are removed.

Will urinary control return after surgery?

Many men experience temporary urinary leakage after surgery, but bladder control usually improves gradually within months.
