What is a Lumpectomy?

A lumpectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove a breast tumor along with a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue. It is most commonly performed to treat early-stage breast cancer while preserving as much of the breast as possible.

Unlike a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast, a lumpectomy removes only the cancerous lump and a small amount of nearby tissue. Because of this, it is often referred to as breast-conserving surgery, partial mastectomy, or wide local excision.

Who May Need a Lumpectomy?

Lumpectomy Procedure

Lumpectomy is usually performed in a hospital or surgical center and typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

1. Preparation

Before surgery, the patient undergoes imaging tests such as a mammogram or ultrasound to locate the tumor precisely. The surgeon also reviews medical history and medications.

2. Anesthesia

The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia, so the patient is asleep and does not feel pain.

3. Incision

The surgeon makes a small incision in the breast over or near the tumor.

4. Tumor Removal

5. Tissue Examination

Common recovery experiences include:
