An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a safe and painless test that records the electrical activity of the brain. The brain constantly produces tiny electrical impulses as nerves communicate. An EEG captures these impulses using small sensors called electrodes placed on the scalp. These signals are displayed as wavy lines on a screen or printout so doctors can see how the brain is working.
Doctors use an EEG to understand brain activity when someone has symptoms such as seizures, fainting, memory problems, or unusual behaviour. The test helps identify abnormal brain patterns, especially when conditions like epilepsy or sleep disorders are suspected. EEG does not hurt, and there are no electrical shocks; it simply detects the natural electrical activity the brain produces. EEG is useful because it shows how the brain works in real time. It is often part of the evaluation when a doctor wants to know if brain activity is normal or if there are signs of a neurological condition.
An EEG may be recommended for people who:
- Have seizures or epilepsy-like symptoms
- Experience fainting or unexplained loss of awareness
- Have convulsions or shaking movements
- Show changes in behaviour, confusion, or memory problems
- Are suspected to have sleep disorders like narcolepsy
- Need evaluation for head injury or brain infection
- Are monitored for changes in brain function during hospital care
- Have abnormal results on other neurological tests
Doctors decide if an EEG is needed based on symptoms, medical history, and physical examination.
There are different types of EEG depending on what the doctor needs to see:
1. Routine EEG
This is the most common type. Electrodes are placed on the scalp, and brain activity is recorded at rest and during simple tasks.
2. Sleep EEG (Sleep-Deprived EEG)
Some abnormalities appear more clearly during sleep or after sleep deprivation. In this test, sleep may be encouraged, or the person may come without enough sleep the night before.
3. Ambulatory EEG
This type allows long-term recording while the person goes about normal activities at home. A portable EEG device records brain waves for hours or days.
4. Video EEG Monitoring
This combines EEG with video recording. It helps doctors see changes in brain activity at the same time as physical behaviour. It is often used for epilepsy evaluation.
Each type gives useful information about brain activity, and the choice depends on symptoms and the doctor's recommendations.
The EEG procedure is simple, safe, and done by trained technicians with support from a doctor.
1. Preparation Before the Test
- Wash your hair the night before and avoid hair products (gel, spray) on the day of the test.
- Do not use caffeine or sedatives as told by your doctor.
- Eat normally unless your doctor gives other instructions.
2. Getting Ready for EEG
- You sit in a comfortable chair or lie on a bed.
- The technician measures your head and places small metal discs (electrodes) on the scalp using a gentle paste or gel.
3. Recording Brain Activity
- The EEG machine records electrical signals from the brain for about 20–60 minutes.
- You may be asked to relax, open and close your eyes, breathe deeply (hyperventilate), or look at mild flashing lights. These activities can help show changes in brain activity.
4. Finishing the Test
- After recording, the electrodes are removed.
- The test is complete, and you can go home or return to activities as advised.
The EEG signals are then reviewed by a neurologist (brain specialist) who interprets the patterns and prepares a report for your doctor.
EEG is non-invasive and does not require recovery time like surgery. After the test:
- You can return to normal activities immediately unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
- Wash your hair to remove the paste or gel used to attach electrodes.
- If sleep deprivation was part of the test, you may feel tired afterwards, so plan rest if needed.
- Your doctor will discuss test results once the EEG report is ready, which may take a few days.
Since EEG does not involve radiation, injections, or sedation in most cases, there are no strict aftercare instructions.
EEG is considered very safe. Most people do not have any problems. However:
- Rarely, someone with a history of seizures may have a seizure when asked to hyperventilate or look at flashing lights. This is expected, and staff are trained to keep you safe.
- Some people may feel uncomfortable sitting still or having electrodes placed on the scalp.
- There is no pain during the test since no electrical current is passed into the brain; the EEG only records natural brain activity.
There are no long-term side effects or damage from an EEG. If you are worried about specific risks, discuss them with your doctor before the test.
