A chemoport (short for chemotherapy port) is a small medical device placed under the skin to help deliver medicines, especially chemotherapy drugs, safely and easily. It is also called a port-a-cath. A chemoport makes it easier for doctors and nurses to give medicines, fluids, or blood tests without repeated needle sticks into the veins.
The chemoport consists of two main parts: a tiny metal or plastic reservoir (port) and a thin flexible tube called a catheter. The port is usually placed under the skin on the chest, and the catheter goes into a large vein near the heart. When a patient needs treatment, the nurse or doctor uses a special needle to access the port through the skin. This system helps make long-term treatments like chemotherapy more comfortable, less painful, and safer.
Chemoport insertion is commonly recommended for people with cancer who need frequent intravenous medicines for weeks or months. Once the treatment period is over, the port can be removed.
