What Is Bankart Repair Surgery?

Bankart repair is a surgical procedure to fix shoulder instability caused by a torn piece of cartilage and ligament in the shoulder joint. A Bankart tear (also called a Bankart lesion) usually happens when the shoulder dislocates repeatedly, and the rim of cartilage (labrum) that helps keep the arm bone (humerus) in the shoulder socket gets damaged. During Bankart repair surgery, the torn cartilage and ligaments are reattached to the shoulder socket to restore stability and prevent future dislocations. Most Bankart repairs today are done with small incisions using a camera (arthroscopy) for faster recovery.

Purpose & Benefits of Bankart Repair

Bankart repair helps correct shoulder instability and improves function:

• Restores stability: Reattaches torn labrum and ligaments to reduce repeated dislocations.

• Reduces pain: By stabilizing the shoulder, it helps reduce discomfort associated with instability.

• Improves shoulder strength: After healing, the shoulder can move more normally and support activity.

• Minimally invasive options: Many Bankart repairs use arthroscopy, which limits tissue damage and may lead to quicker recovery.

• Better quality of life: Allows many patients to return to daily activities and some sports with less fear of shoulder slipping.

Who May Benefit from Bankart Repair?

Bankart repair may be recommended for people who:

• Have repeated shoulder dislocations or instability after a shoulder injury.

• Experience shoulder “giving way” during movement or activity.

• Have a confirmed Bankart lesion on MRI or scan, and conservative treatments haven’t helped.

• Want to return to sports or active lifestyles without recurrent shoulder dislocations.

Types of Bankart Repair

Bankart repair can be done using:

• Arthroscopic Bankart Repair: Small incisions around the shoulder with a tiny camera and tools reattach the torn labrum and ligaments. Most common and minimally invasive.

• Open Bankart Repair: A larger incision allows direct access to the shoulder. It may be needed in complex cases or when bone loss exists.

Bankart Repair Treatment Process

1. Consultation & Planning:

The surgeon reviews your history, X-rays, and MRI to confirm the tear and plan the repair.

2. Anesthesia:

You receive general anesthesia, so you are asleep and do not feel pain during surgery.

3. Arthroscopic/Open Repair:

Small or larger incisions are made to access the shoulder. The labrum and torn ligaments are reattached to the socket using sutures and small anchors.

4. Closure:

Incisions are closed with stitches, and a dressing is applied.

5. Recovery:

The arm is usually placed in a sling for several weeks. Physical therapy begins to regain motion and strength.

Duration & Therapy Setting

Bankart repair is done in a hospital operating theatre by an orthopedic surgeon, under general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes about 1–2 hours, depending on technique and severity. Afterward, you may stay in the hospital briefly; many patients go home the same day or the next day, depending on overall health and the surgeon advice.

Safety, Precautions & Risks

Bankart repair is generally safe when done by experienced specialists, but like all surgeries, it has risks:

Common/expected effects:

• Sling and limited movement during early recovery.

• Mild pain and swelling around the shoulder.

Possible risks:

• Infection or bleeding.

• Stiffness or reduced motion if rehabilitation is slow.

• Nerve injury or implant issues.

• Recurrent instability in some cases.

Your surgeon will explain risks clearly before the operation and guide you on preparation and recovery.

Frequently asked questions

What is Bankart repair used for?

Bankart repair is used to fix recurrent shoulder dislocations and instability by repairing the torn labrum and ligaments in the shoulder joint so the arm stays stable in its socket.

Is Bankart repair painful?

You are under anaesthesia during surgery so you don’t feel pain. After surgery, soreness and swelling are normal but usually managed with pain medication and rest.

How long does Bankart repair take?

The procedure usually takes about 1–2 hours depending on how the surgery is done and how extensive the repair is.

How long is recovery?

You may use a sling for several weeks. Full return to normal or sports activity often takes 3–6 months with guided physical therapy.

Are there risks?

Yes. Risks include infection, stiffness, nerve injury, and rare recurrence of instability. Your surgeon will explain them before surgery.

What is the difference between arthroscopic and open Bankart repair?

Arthroscopic repair uses small incisions and a camera for a less invasive fix, while open repair uses a larger cut for direct access. The choice depends on injury severity.

Can I play sports after Bankart repair?

Many patients return to sports after healing and physical therapy, usually after several months to ensure stability and strength return.

Do I still need physical therapy?

Yes. Physical therapy is essential to regain full motion, strength, and stability after the procedure.
