Bankart repair is a surgical procedure to fix shoulder instability caused by a torn piece of cartilage and ligament in the shoulder joint. A Bankart tear (also called a Bankart lesion) usually happens when the shoulder dislocates repeatedly, and the rim of cartilage (labrum) that helps keep the arm bone (humerus) in the shoulder socket gets damaged. During Bankart repair surgery, the torn cartilage and ligaments are reattached to the shoulder socket to restore stability and prevent future dislocations. Most Bankart repairs today are done with small incisions using a camera (arthroscopy) for faster recovery.
Bankart repair helps correct shoulder instability and improves function:
• Restores stability: Reattaches torn labrum and ligaments to reduce repeated dislocations.
• Reduces pain: By stabilizing the shoulder, it helps reduce discomfort associated with instability.

Bankart repair may be recommended for people who:

• Have a confirmed Bankart lesion on MRI or scan, and conservative treatments haven’t helped.
• Want to return to sports or active lifestyles without recurrent shoulder dislocations.
Bankart repair can be done using:
• Arthroscopic Bankart Repair: Small incisions around the shoulder with a tiny camera and tools reattach the torn labrum and ligaments. Most common and minimally invasive.
• Open Bankart Repair: A larger incision allows direct access to the shoulder. It may be needed in complex cases or when bone loss exists.
1. Consultation & Planning:
The surgeon reviews your history, X-rays, and MRI to confirm the tear and plan the repair.
2. Anesthesia:
You receive general anesthesia, so you are asleep and do not feel pain during surgery.
3. Arthroscopic/Open Repair:
Small or larger incisions are made to access the shoulder. The labrum and torn ligaments are reattached to the socket using sutures and small anchors.
4. Closure:
Incisions are closed with stitches, and a dressing is applied.
5. Recovery:
The arm is usually placed in a sling for several weeks. Physical therapy begins to regain motion and strength.
Bankart repair is done in a hospital operating theatre by an orthopedic surgeon, under general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes about 1–2 hours, depending on technique and severity. Afterward, you may stay in the hospital briefly; many patients go home the same day or the next day, depending on overall health and the surgeon advice.
Bankart repair is generally safe when done by experienced specialists, but like all surgeries, it has risks:
